CERI is a research centre within the National Political Science Foundation (FNSP). Founded in 1952, it has been associated with the National Science Research Council (CNRS) since 1967. It has approximately 40 full time research fellows, 15 associate fellows and 10 support staff.

The Centre approaches political analysis of the contemporary world with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinarity; among its fellows are political scientists, economists, sociologists and anthropologists. It has a two-fold objective: to contribute to an in-depth basic understanding of foreign political societies; and to respond to non-academic requirements for expert analysis on contemporary major international issues.

Fellows at the CERI undertake both individual and team based research projects. Team-based projects are developed by various research groups on either a thematic or a geographical basis. Topics of recent seminars and conferences included: European multiculturalism; migrations; assimilation and citizenship; political change and ethnic conflict in the Balkans; the former Soviet Union; Turkey; Northern Ireland.

This Laboratory, which has been functioning since 1986, is in part the descendant of the research group created on the basis of Pluriel (1975-1983) - the journal that tried to organise into a coherent sector of social science research diverse social and historical phenomena that had up to that time been studied under different labels: racial relations, interethnic relations, minority problems, migrations, regional questions, national questions. Today CERIEM co-ordinates the research of the teaching and research staff of the university and the researchers and PhD candidates in sociology and anthropology and hosts maitrise students.

Recent projects include: 'General questions about a sociology of interethnic relations' (co-ordinated by Pierre-Jean Simon), 'Conceptual instruments for analysis of the processes of social differentiation and hierarchisation', 'The question of foreigners in France and Great Britain' (co-ordinated by Ida Simon-Barouh), 'Immigration, refugees, ethnic populations: the "second generations", cultural contacts and ethnic coexistence, construction of identity, education and socialisation', 'Ethno-sociology of Bretagne' (co-ordinated by Pierre-Jean Simon).

The CIEMI centre for documentation was established in Paris in 1973 on the basis of the archives inherited from L'Eco d'Italia, an Italian language newspaper for immigrants in France, published in Agen from 1936 to 1973. The centre formed the core of the new association CIEMM, set up in 1977, which became CIEMI in 1985. The aim of CIEMI is to highlight, through documentation, publications and training, the role of international migrations in transforming and rearranging the social, cultural and religious environments of national societies.

CIEMI regularly publishes 6-7 volumes per year and two periodicals, the bi-monthly Migrations Société (as of 1989) and the monthly Migrations Europe (1991), put out jointly with CENE (Migrations News Sheet) in Brussels. The monthly is a publication of the Réseau d'Informations Européen (RIE) set up by the Centre d'Information et d'Etudes sur les Migrations Internationales (Paris), the Comité des Eglises auprès des Migrants en Europe (Brussels), the Commission on Racial Equality (London) and the Flyktingggruppernas och Asylkommitteernas Riksrad (Sweden).

To that end, the CNDP has opened to the public its archives containing documentation, teaching aids for the training of adults and youths with learning difficulties, and information on and for immigrants.

Research by SOLIIS is guided by a wish to examine migration from a holistic perspective. Migratory movements are viewed not as abstract phenomena, but as social actions whose social significance cannot be separated from the actors involved. Consequently, research has been directed towards study of the ways in which the actors within the migratory process autonomously construct a rationale for their behaviour, which has little to do with official discourse and the explanations of experts for the phenomenon. All studies are part of a theoretical project aimed at setting up a typology of ways of symbolically producing collective identity. This project is meant to bring together theoretical proposals related to those fundamental concepts (categorisation, strategies, symbolic resources) that underlie the reinvigorated study of identity which has taken place in the last 20 years in the often heterogeneous framework of diverse disciplines (sociology, social psychology, anthropology).

INED has been carrying out surveys on the immigrant population since 1976. A major survey (13,000 questionnaires completed), begun in 1992, analysed the living conditions of immigrants and their children and in particular the problem of their assimilation. Scholastic performance of children, their behaviour and aspirations, their opportunities for independence, access to the labour market, and cultural practices are the aspects with which the study, directed by Michel Tribalat, are especially concerned.

One of the more recent studies, directed by Youssef Courbage and carried out with the participation of national experts, deals with the problem of interethnic relations in Europe in selected countries (Hungarian, Gypsy and German minorities in Slovakia, Hungary and Romania; the Russian minority in Estonia; and the conflict between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland).
