THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL
RESEARCH INSTITUTE ESRI
The Institute is an independent, non-profit-making organisation, which works to increase knowledge of the social and economic conditions of society with particular reference to Ireland. It conducts research by its own staff in close co-operation with universities and other organisations.
THE EUROPEAN BUREAU FOR LESSER
USED LANGUAGES
The aim of the European Bureau for Lesser Used Languages is to conserve and promote the regional, autochthonous languages and cultures of the European Union. It works in close co-operation with the European institutions, in particular the European Parliament and the Commission, as well as the Council of Europe.
The Bureaus strategy is based on three main points: seeking legal and political support and funding at European, state, regional and local level, in order to carry out projects concerning the lesser used languages; the publication and dissemination of informational material on the lesser used languages and exchanges of information and experience among the groups active in promoting these languages; and the setting up of structures to support autochthonous linguistic communities in various domains.
Two offices are responsible for the implementation of this policy: the Dublin Head Office and the Brussels Information Centre (See entry under Belgium). The Dublin Head Office co-ordinates the work of the Member State Committees and develops contacts with European and international institutions and organisations. The Bureau publishes the Contact Bulletin three times each year.
