The research projects carried out at the Department of Social Anthropology deal with African migration; multiculturalism and urban cultures; racism and xenophobia; internal migration; ethnicity and ethnic identity; and Catalan nationalism. Members of the Department include Professor Dolores Comas dArgemir, and Jordi Roca with the researchers Marta Alonso, Carmen Martinez, Albert Montcusí, Patricia Rocha, Sonia Gatius, Carmen Gallego, and Augustí Andreu.

Colectivo Ioe is an independent research group. Since 1985 it has carried out research work on migration. Areas studied include: the evolution of migration into Spain; immigration and work (construction, catering and domestic service); immigration and gender (women immigrants from non-Community countries); a study of national groups (Moroccans in Catalonia); attitudes towards the foreign population; children of immigrants in the Spanish school system.

The department is currently working on the following research projects: The Growth of Ethnic conflict with the Gypsy minority in Spain, The Social Representation of Gypsies and other Minorities by Spanish students (1115 years of age) and Gypsy Women and the Gender and Marriage Systems of Spanish Gypsies. The department is publishing books and papers on these topics.

The Department of Social Anthropology, Sociology and Social Work, in collaboration withthe Group for the Study of Socio-Cultural Identity in Andalusia (geisa) is currently working on the following projects: Processes of Ethnogenesis in Andalusia: contents of fundamental Andalusian cultural identity and its social and political dimensions; Forms of association: ritual contexts of the reproduction of Andalusian identity and socio-cultural problems of Andalusian migrants in Catalonia; Gipsy-Andalusian minorities in relation to Andalusian cultural elements such as flamenco; Study of the problems due to social integration and cultural re-adaptation of northern and sub-Sahara African migrants settled in intensive agriculture Andalusian regions, with particular attention to interethnic relations; Study of interethnic relations in the region of Marmas del Guadalquivir and their connection with the social class system, the cultures of labour, sex and genre identities; Study of interethnic relations in the Andalusian Costa del Sol (in this region many important European minority groups settle permanently: the research analyses the reflections of interethnic relations in local politics); Study of the pluriethnic society and the ethnogenesis process developed in Gibraltar in the second half of this century; Study of interethnic relations and their connection with the social class structure in the northern regions of Argentina.

ERAPI is an interdisciplinary group of academics for the study of international migrations and their relations with local societies, with particular attention to Catalonia. The group works primarily on the analysis of theoretical models of intercultural relations, identity and otherness definition processes, and the analysis of specific situations where such intercultural relations take place (the school, mass media, social relief organisations).
The members of the group are: Dolores Juliano, Danielle Provansal, Valeria Bergalli, Enrique Santamaria, Jesus Delgado, Jordi Pascual, Juan de la Haba, Manuel Munoz, Isabel Samitier, Purificacion Ruiz, and Eleonora Muntanola.

The main research projects of the Faculty of Law, under the direction of Professor Gurutz Jauregui (who also participates, as an expert in ethnic conflicts, in a project of the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), in Geneva pertain to: ETA and forms of violent nationalism; problems of relations between ethnic groups in the different regions of Spain; regional decentralisation within the European Union.

The Centre, in connection with the Department of Sociology of the University of Barcelona, carries out research on the following subjects: legislation and regularisation processes of immigrants, working conditions; racism and discrimination in urban environments and in the labour market; intercultural education; immigrant women, multiculturalism, language and discrimination. The Centre applies game theory to ethnic conflicts, carries out surveys and qualitative research.
