The Centre is concerned with all areas of human rights education, new rights, duties, obligations, codes of conduct, conventions and recommendations. Its training courses include: international standard setting instruments; universal and regional instruments; verification and control procedures for human rights; UN and its specialised agencies; regional lever bodies and National Commissions; human rights education; protection of special groups; rights of children, women, minorities, refugees and the handicapped. Its current research project is: ‘Pédagogies relatives à l’èducation aux droits de l’homme’.

HURIDOCS was created in 1982. It is a global network in the field of human rights, economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights facilitating the identification, recording and free flow of public human rights information through more effective, appropriate and compatible methods and techniques of information handling.

Current human rights research is on techniques and tools for the monitoring of economic, social and cultural rights and documenting human rights violations.

HURIDOCS organises local and regional training workshops for NGOs and other professionals working in the field and an outreach and information programme. It also supports postgraduate internships at the HURIDOCS Secretariat.

HURIDOCS publishes the quarterly bulletin Huridocs News.

The Institute of Ethnology has a particular interest in studies on Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. Its research projects are: ‘Reprivatisation in Bulgaria’ (economic anthrology; rural sociology), ‘Rewriting History in Post-Socialist Countries’ (historical anthropology), ‘State/Nation Building and Identity Formation in the New States’ (ethnicity and nationalism studies). Researchers include Professor Christian Giordano, Elke-Nicole Kappus and Dobrinka Kostova. The Institute co-operates with scientists and researchers from Eastern and South-Eastern Europe.

The Institute co-edits the Anthropological Journal on European Cultures (AJEC). Since 1997 the Institute offers a specialised degree in Ethnology of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe.

Formerly the Institute of East European Studies (founded by J.M. Bochenski in 1958), the present interfaculty Institute of Eastern and Central European Studies at the University of Fribourg offers an interdisciplinary course of study and research concentrated on the following disciplines: slavistics, political science, philosophy, law and economics. The Institute houses a substantial library with particular emphasis on Slavic languages and literatures as well as philosophy in Eastern Europe and Russia. Further expansion of library facilities is foreseen in the other disciplines. Research projects are pursued with partners in East and Central Europe and elsewhere. The journal Studies in Eastern European Thought and a monograph series Sovietica are edited by members of the Institute.

The Centre is a non-governmental organisation, whose main activities are: providing information, analysis, relevant training, legal, political and practical advice and input by international human rights standards and procedures, for human rights defenders. The Centre runs specific projects, including issues such as minorities, women’s rights and protection of human rights defenders. The Centre also runs its Geneva Training Course for human rights defenders worldwide, but primarily from the South, and training workshops.

The Centre publishes the Human Rights Monitor, a quarterly review, together with HR-Documentation-DH, a technical report on UN bodies and documentation. The Centre also publishes a series of manuals and information packs for participants on their training courses.

From May 1993 to early 1995 the Institute was engaged in a research project called ‘Racism and xenophobia: Toward the semantic of the alien in the public debate’ (Kurt Imhof and Gaetano Romano). This research project was to be linked with another project, ‘The Alien in Switzerland. Typification and Attitudes’ (Hans Joachim Hoffman-Nowotny, Monique Dupuis, Kurt Imhof and Gaetano Romano). This project began in February 1994 and ended in late 1996.

The Forum, established in 1995, is affiliated with the University of Neuchatel, and funded by a number of Swiss public and private institutions, including the Swiss Academy of Human and Social Sciences. Its research staff is drawn from several disciplines: ethnology (Andreas Wimmer), sociology (Denise Efionayi-Mädar and Josef Martin Niederberger), political sciences (Hans Mahnig and Gianni D’Amato), economics and geography (Etienne Piguet).

The Forum monitors research on migrations to Switzerland and carries out original research commissioned by private and public organisations.
