The Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies (JEMS) has existed under its old title New Community since 1971. As migration and ethnic studies have become of increasing relevance at a global level, the journal has evolved to take account of this new reality. JEMS has appointed  Associate Editors in North America and the Asia-Pacific and changed its name to make its subject matter more transparent to new readers. JEMS has subscribers in 40 countries worldwide.

JEMS will continue to publish the results of first class research on all forms of migration and its consequences, together with articles on ethnic conflict, discrimination, racism, nationalism, citizenship and policies of integration. For more than a decade, JEMS has published special issues devoted to topics of major academic and policy importance. They consist of collections of essays by leading specialists with an editorial introduction.  Contributions to the journal, which are fully refereed by independent scientific specialists, are especially welcome when they report on comparative research. Contributions are invited from any branch of the social sciences, and the results of inter-disciplinary research are of particular interest.

JEMS has a long-standing interest in policy debates, and in the evaluation of policy initiatives. It will continue to publish special issues on themes of current interest. The book review section will aim to cover the most important titles, and sections on ‘Research notes’ and ‘Debates’ will be included on a regular basis.
